Born in Parkstone, Dorset in 1889 Thomas Charles Powell became the professional at Mersea Island Golf Club in 1913, succeeding William Lonie. How and when Thomas got into the profession of golf is as yet unclear nevertheless, he remained at Mersea until 1916 when the club had to close as the Army claimed use of the clubs grounds and Thomas had to take employment on a farm. He would volunteer to join the Colours in place of another stockman on the farm and he enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Sadly, after being severly injured in the battle of Havrincourt in September 1918 he died of his wounds the next day leaving a wife and two small children Thomas Powell was 29 years of age and is buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun.
