Born in Forest Hall, Tynmouth in 1897 to a Scottish father from Alyth, he was one of seven children. Although the family moved around due to his fathers job on the electric tramways he went to school in Teddington, Middlesex. His entry into the profession of golf is as yet unclear but it is recorded that he was an assistant to Philip Taylor the resident golf professional at Fulwell Golf Club prior to the outbreak of the war. Roy McInnes enlisted in the 2nd Battalion London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) and would experience fighting in Malta, Egypt and the Dardanelles before being despatched to France. By now a Corporal he was reported missing on the first day of the Battle of the Somme 1st July 1916. However, it wasn't until the following May that his parents were informed that he had fallen in action, he was just 19 years of age and is buried at Gommecourt British Cemetery No. 2, Hebuterne.
