Never forget: Major Lanoe Hawker VC, 25 years old, was shot down over Bapaume in 1916 after a lengthy dog-fight with Baron Von Richthofen, the Red Baron. He received the DSO in 1915 and in that year became the first airman to be awarded the Victoria Cross. He established himself as the first Commonwealth air ace, and achieved seven victories in total.
