More commenly known as Bertie, Robert McDougall was born in Milngavie, Stirlingshire in 1895 before the family moved to Bridge of Weir in 1901. He started his golf career as a club maker at Old Course Ranfurly he must have made a big impressiion there as by 1914 he had become its professional at only 18 years of age. Volunteering for the war in November 1915 he was sent to France with the 15th Battalion Highland Light Infantry. On the 18th November 1916 he was killed by a snipers bullet while on a raiding party and is buried in the Munich Trench British Cemetery, he was just 20 years of age. Four graves away lies the body of Robert Barr, another young man from Bridge of Weir who, had been an assistant golf professional at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club he was killed on the same day as Bertie.
