Alfred Hayles was born in 1881 at Landport, Portsea Island, at the time his father was serving in the Royal Navy. Alfred was destined to become an assistant to PGA founding father J H Taylor at Royal Mid Surrey. He was with Taylor for 5 years before moving in 1907 to take up the professionals position at Rotherham & District Golf Club succeeding Taylor's younger brother Josh. That same year Alfred would become a member of  The Professional Golfers' Association, Northern Section, and would remain at Rotherham until 1913. At the outbreak of the war he and his family were residing in Littlestone-on-Sea and at New Romney he enrolled in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). His Battalion moved to the Western Front in August 1915 in readiness for the Battle of the Somme and it was during that battle, at Delville Wood just over a year later, that he fell in action along with 64 other soldiers in his Battalion.
