Charles Ernest Anscombe was born on the 26th October 1893 in Ewell, Surrey, UK. He was my Great-Grandfathers elder brother. His middle name on his birth certificate was actually "Haddon", and this also appears on his service record along with Ernest from time to time. I am not sure where this new middle name comes from, but suspect this may come from his stepfather as his own father died when he was only 5 years old. On the 12th July 1912 he set sail from Liverpool, England on the SS Great Britain arriving in Quebec on the 19th July. On 11th July 1914 he married Theresa Elizabeth Shipp at St Michael & All Angels Church, Kelowna, Canada and they had two children Ernest (1915) and Ivy (1916) Charles joined the 85th Battalion Nova Scotia Regiment in France on the 17th March 1917. He was wounded on the 30th June 1917 at Lens and was killed on the 30th October 1917 before Passchendale during the attack at Decline Copse and Vienna Cottage. He is commemorated on the Cranleigh England war memorial, the Menin Gate, Ypres and on the 85th Battalion memorial near where he was killed.
