Born in Romford, Essex in October 1884,  Robert Finch was the son of John Finch a general Labourer. He would go on to secure a job as an assistant to the legendary professional James Braid at his local club Romford, before taking up his first professional post at the now defunct 9-hole Galleywood course in 1909. That same year he was elected a member of The Professional Golfers' Association in the Southern Section. Galleywood would become the Chelmsford Club and moved to the new location of Widford Park with Finch as its professional. Enlisting in the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment he was severly injured during the Battle of Monchy-le-Preux on the 17th April 1917, dying from his wounds shortly afterwards.
