Born in Basford, Nottinghamshire in 1885 John Egleshahaw, married to Ellen and, a father of two became the golf professional at Southwell Golf Club in 1912. As this was not a full-time post, to supplement his income he also worked in the local lace factory of E Cary & Sons. John would join the Royal Naval Air Service as an Aircraftsman 2nd Class in 1917. That same year on active service he was struck by the propeller of a sea plane and would die from his wounds. He is buried in Southwell Minster (St Mary) Churchyard.
