Born in Bunghay, Suffolk in 1890, the third eldest of 9 sons and a dughter of Samuel Davey a hay cutter. William would start his golfing career around 1906, as an Assistant to his uncle Ashley Davey at Thanet Golf Club. He would be appointed as Professional and greens-man at the 9 hole Newton Green Golf Club in 1910. William would remain there until his enlistment in Sudbury, as a Private in the Suffolk Regiment in early 1915. He would go on to serve as a scout in the British Expeditionary Forces and while engaged in battle he fell in action on the 18th September 1915 at the age of 25.
