Richard John Ballard was the fourth of eight children of Charles Ballard and Grace neé Snow. He was born in 1896 in Lake, Isle of Wight. He enlisted with the Hampshire Regiment & entered the Balkans theatre of war on 10th August 1915. Richard was killed in action in Jerusalem on 20th November 1917. His brothers Frederick William (2nd October 1916) & Oliver Charles (17th October 1918) were also killed.
