Patrick was born in 1886 in Liverpool the sixth child of Michael Philbin and Sarah Philbin (nee Mulligan). He enlisted and served with the 8th (Liverpool Irish) Btn. Kings (Liverpool) Regiment in France. Patrick was killed in action on the 17th June 1918. The following letter was sent to his mother dated 20th June 1918 from his C.O. "Dear Mrs Philbin, It is with the deepest regret that I have to inform you that your son No.307571 Patrick Philbin was killed in action on 17th June. Along with a comrade he was on sentry in an isolated post during a heavy bombardment. Although shells were falling all around the post your son stood fast. Unfortunately a shell burst quite close to where he was standing and he along with his friend was killed instantaneously. It may be of some comfort to you to know that he did not suffer and that he died doing his duty. Words cannot express the sorrow we all feel at losing so brave and good a comrade. His cheerfulness and absolute fearlessness had earned for him the respect of all who knew him. On behalf of all the officers, NCO's and men of the company I extend to you our sincerest sympathy and pray that God may comfort and strengthen you in your very great loss" Patrick was buried at Couin New British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
