My Great Uncle, Pte George Marshall was born on August 25, 1891 at Bury St Edmunds the second of five children of Thomas and Emma (nee Catton) Marshall. The family moved to 25 Fawcett Road, Aldeburgh, when Thomas was discharged from the Suffolk Regiment after 26 years service. George, who signed up when war was declared, was a member of the 7th Bn Suffolk Regiment, part of the Central Brigade when the 12th Division attacked Ovillers at 3.15am on July 3, 1916. The first four waves of attack reached the village but were cut off in the darkness from supporting troops. The Suffolks lost 470 of all ranks and every Company Commander. George Marshall, aged 25, was one of the fallen. He has no known grave but is commemorated on Pier 2 Face A of the Thiepval Memorial. His older brother William was discharged after suffering serious injury during the retreat from Mons, and his younger brother Robert served at Gallipoli and in Palestine. His sisters Ellen and May lived in the family home at Aldeburgh until their deaths in 1991 and 1983 respectively. Ellen was the town's post mistress and was in the Post Office when it was bombed during World War Two. 'And some there be who have no memorial: they perish as though they had never been. But their name liveth for evermore.' Ecclesiasticus
