Born on the 5th February 1890, in Devonport, Devon Henry was the eldest of four brothers all of whom would become golf professionals. Exactly where Henry started his career in golf is as yet unclear, nevertheless he was to become a member of The Professional Golfers' Association in 1908 in the Northern Section. He would secure his first professional post at Ulveston Golf Club, Cumbria in 1911  and remained there until 1914 and the outbreak of the war. With his younger brother Albert he would enlist in his fathers former Regiment the Sherwood Forresters where he would be promoted to Lance Sergeant. Fighting alongside his brother in the Dardanelles, Henry was injured at the Suvla Bay landings during the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign. Albert went to dress his wounds and while doing so was killed outright by a shot through the head. The next shot finished off Henry. It was reported from the battlefield that they died in each others arms. Henry was 25 years of age his brother Albert, just 20.
