Albert Cottrell was born on the 13th August 1894 in Dublin he was the second youngest of four brothers who, would all become Golf Professionals. After starting his golf career assisting his elder brothers he secured the post at Bradford Golf Club as assistant to resident professional Harry Fulford. He would become a member of The Professional Golfers' Association in 1912 in the Northern Section. At the outset of the war he and older brother Henry enlisted in their fathers former Regiment the Sherwood Forresters. Fighting together at the Suvla Bay Landings, Gallipoli Sergeant Henry Cottrell was wounded. Albert turned back to dress his brothers wounds and while doing so was shot dead. A second shot ended Henry's life. A surviving soldier reported that they died in each others arms.
