William John McNeill was born in Lewisham c 1894.
He enlisted 16 January 1912 aged 18. He was employed as a bakers assistant.His character was good and he was said to be willing and particularly industrious. He had been company cook for 6 months and had shown himself to be very hardworking. He was also a smart looking lad who had done well at school. He was 5 2 ½ inches tall and weighed 117lbs. He had hazel eyes, light brown hair and a fresh complexion. He had scars on his knees and a tattoo of a cross on his right forearm. It was noted he as slightly knocked kneed.Amongst his effects were photos, letters, post card album, old comrades membership book, driving certificate and post office savings book.
His brother Edward George was serving in the 74th Battalion Artillery.
In the local newspaper report of his death his address was given as 83 Napier Street.
In 1911 he was living at 213 Childers Street, Deptford with his sister Louisa Ridgeley. His widowed father Edward Charles and 13 year old sister Ethel were also living there. His mother died in 1905 aged 43.
In 1901 he was living at 93 Napier Street, Deptford with his parents Edward and Emma. Also living there were his brother Edward and sisters Eliza and Ethel.
He was commmemorated at St Marks now in St Paul Church, Diamond Way,Deptford
