Alfred Bonner was born in Bottesford, Leicestershire in 1891 the son of the Station Master at Bulwell Railway Sation As his golfing career began he would move to Bulwell, Nottinham to serve as an Assistant to the then Club Professional Walter Tedder. He took over the roll as Professional from Tedder in 1910 after becoming a member of The Professional Golfers' Association a year earlier. On the 8th December 1915 Alfred enlisted as a Private in the 12th Battalion Sherwood Forresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment). After being wounded in action twice previously, in June 1917 he would fall for the final time on the field of battle. His name is commemorated at the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial to the missing and, on the Bulwell War Memorial
