Robert 'Bobbie' Barr was born in 1895 at Mount Pleasant, Bridge of Weir one of 10 brothers and sisters. Before the outbreak of WWI he was employed as an Assistant to Club Professional Charles McIntosh at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club.

Bobby volunteered in November 1914 and was enlisted into the 15th Battalion Highland Light Infantry. A week earlier Robert 'Bertie' McDougall the Professional at Old Course Ranfurly the golf club near his had joined the same Battalion.

Private Robert Barr joined the theatre of War on the 23rd November 1915 and survived until the 18th November the following year. He was killed by shrapnel during the Battle of Ancre the final offensive on the Battle of the Somme. A snipers bullet killed Bertie McDougal on the very same day. They are both buried at the Munich Trench British Cemetery within four graves of each other. Young Robert was just 21 years of age.
