He was born between January and March 1892 at Deptford.
In 1911 he was living at 42 Addy Street, Deptford with his parents John William and Ellen. Also living there are his brother and 5 sisters. His Ellen has died.
In 1901 he is living at 46 Addy Street with his parents and brother and 4 sisters.
He enlisted 19th March 1915 at East Dulwich and his occupation was given as an engineer’s labourer.
He was 5ft 8 /12 inches tall and had a heart on his right forearm and a scar on his left forearm.
He was discharged 3rd February 1919 due to heart disease and pneumonia.
He had previously been wounded on the 19th September 1917 and again on the 4th October 1917 when he had gas (shell) poisoning. 10 December 1917 and also received a gunshot wound on 12th May 1918.
He had 2 brothers John William Smith who was also on active service and Thomas. He had 5 sisters Elizabeth, Rosina, Harriett, Mary and Jane.
