He was born 17 November 1881 and baptised 3 July 1892 at St. Pauls Church, Deptford. The family were living at Napier Street.

In 1891 he was living at Benthon Street, St Paul Deptford with his parents James and Elizabeth. He had a brother William and 3 sisters Edith, Maud and Gertrude.
