Ever since I can remember my Mother would tell me the (then unfinished) story of her Great Uncle Cliff. Mum never knew him. He was killed during WW1 and a good few years before she was born. Uncle Cliff came home on leave. He had fallen in love and told his Father that he didn't want to go back to the War.His father talked him round and off he went never to be seen again. The next thing the family heard was that he was dead. But for whatever reason nobody was told when, how, or why. Various theories ensued. Some said he had gone AWOL and had been taken to the front and shot for cowardice. Others said that he was killed and buried in Alexandria. Whilst another theory was that he had been brought home and buried at Haslar. I thought I would like to find out what had happened and living nearby I checked out Haslar cemetery and he wasn't there and without knowing much more than his name hit a dead end. In recent years with the help of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website searching for Uncle Cliff became very easy and in a couple of clicks I found him! He wasn't dishonoured and he wasn't killed in Alexandria. He was in fact killed in Gallipoli and buried at at the Lancashire Landing Cemetery. I am pleased to say that I was able to finish the story for my Mother before she died. I've even managed to get hold of a picture of his grave. Maybe one day I shall be able to visit, lay some flowers and let him know he was never forgotten. I never knew Great, great Uncle Cliff but I will remember him.
