Jack volunteered for the West Riding Territorials on the 2nd Sept 1914 after the outbreak of war. He then served with the BEF in France and Flanders from 14th April 1915. He was wounded in action in Ypres and was transferred to the St. Johns Hospital in Etaples France, where he died of head wounds on the 18th November 1915. He is buried at Etaples Cemetery France.
