William served in the 9th South Staffordshire Regiment, a regiment which was converted to a Pioneer role early in the war whilst in France. William served in France and saw many battles there, his brother Herbert was in the Royal Engineers. Both saw service in France before being shipped off to Italy in Nov 1917. It was here in October 1918, just a month before the end of the war, that William suffered a gunshot wound to his right knee. He was evacuated back to the UK and admitted to Lord Derby's War Hospital in Warrington. His condition deteriorated, with his mother at his bedside he died from .Bronc ho-Pneumonia Septic on the 29th March 1919 aged 36. He was buried in his home town of Leeds at Harehills Cemetery. His brother Herbert survived the war and returned home to his wife and family.
