Charles was the eldest son of Alfred and Esther (nee Blundert) Shaw, born on 15 December 1893, Padeswood Lane, Bistree, Buckley, Flintshire. His siblings were Hannah, Martha Jane, Beatrice, George Alfred, Mary, Esther and Neville.  Before signing up, he worked down the mines and was a regular member of Bistre Methodist Church.
