Alfred was a postman, having 3 boys: Horace William, Eric Alfred, and Cyril. He was ****ed in action with comrade 141850 Gunner Amos Albert John Solomon (not Soloman), who was 19. Amos was the son of John William, a farm labourer, and Sarah Jane nee Brooks. He was born 19/4/1898 at Carlton Colville, Suffolk, so had just had his 19th birthday in France after landing at Le Havre in March 1917 with the 295th Siege Battery. Amos was ****ed in action 26/9/17 with my grandfather Corporal Alfred William Charles, aged 35. He took his grandfather's name, and in 1911 lived at 3 Dell Road, Oulton Broad, with his brother Arthur Alfred 2 years younger. Amos and Alfred Charles were both ****ed in action on Wednesday afternoon, 260917, the Battle of Polygon Wood at a firing position at Armagh Wood on the slopes of Mount Sorrel, probably by enemy shellfire on their ammunition supply. They are buried side by side, with Alfred's family inscription "Only a Step Removed". RIP lads, from Alfred's grandson Michael Charles.
