James, known as Jack by his family, was wounded in the Battle of the Somme and repatriated to the UK to recover, but was then involved in a fatal road traffic accident. He was knocked down and killed by a bus. The eldest of 16 children, he grew up in Stony Stratford. Percy Ira Aries, his nephew, is 92 and lives in Newport Pagnell. Joan Street, nee Aries, Jack's niece, lives in Solihull. Percy remembers his grandparents, who were Jack's parents, from his childhood.
