John Wilfred Butterworth John Wilfred was more commonly known by his middle name Wilfred, he was born in Royton in 1882. His parents were George Butterworth and Elizebeth Emma Kershaw my great great grandparents. He lived in Royton all his short life, playing for the local football team Royton Congregational AFC.  When his parents moved to Blackpool, he remained in Royton working at the local Vine Cotton Mill. He joined the Kings (Liverpool) Regiment in 1916 and went on active service in the spring of 1917.  On the 28th March 1918 he along with 40 of his comrades lost their lives after coming under attack from machine guns and heavy shelling. 100 years to the day he died, my brother and I took my Mother to Poziers cemetry in France to pay our respects. John Wilfred Butterworth, forever in our thoughts. Rest in Peace
