James Sutcliffe was born in Dec 1876 at Chatham, Kent. He apparently followed his father into the Royal Marine Light Infantry serving with the Portsmouth Batallion. He married Gladys Mills in 1912 and they had a son.

He was a member of the cchoir at St Thomas's church, Portsmouth and also played cricket for Hampshire in 1911. 

He was killed at Galipolli but his body was not found or identified.
