George Ballard was the younger of two children of Harriett Hughes (formerly Ballard) & was born in Basingstoke, Hampshire in 1888. He worked in farming as a carter and latterly as a Traction Engine Driver. Disembarked in the Asiatic theatre of war 25 October 1915 & was killed in action at Basra, Iraq on 21st January 1916. His only sibling, Arthur John Ballard, died 27th May 1918 at the Third Battle of the Aisne.
