Arthur Cliffe, son of Jesse and Mary Cliffe was killed in action in the First World War. He joined the duke of Wellingtons west riding regiment, after his younger brother Ernest Cliffe joined the West Yorkshire regiment, who was later transferred to the machine gun corps. On the 31st of July Arthur was killed in action at the battle of the Somme. He died of gunshot and shrapnel wounds. He is buried in the Puchevillers British cemetery in France. At the end of the war, Arthur's father Jesse Cliffe received Arthur's British war medal, victory medal, and a bronze death commemoration plaque. His brother Ernest survived the war, and went on to have two sons who both fought in the Second World War. Ernest also received a British war medal, and a victory medal. I have been to visit Arthur's grave and pay my respects, and I treasure his and his brothers medals. He is not forgotten.
