John William Chapman was the brother of my grandmother, Edith Chapman. I never knew him but after she died I came across a booklet from his memorial service and the 2 pictures are taken from this. He was born in 1892 and joined up in 1915 in Yorkshire. Having worked with horses, he was assigned to work with them during the war with the Scottish Horse. He is commemorated on the memorial at Vis-en-Artois but I'm not sure where he is buried. Looking at the clues on the booklet it seems likely he died at the beginning of the Battle of Amiens and having read war diaries from the unit he was with when he died, the 6th Dragoons (Inniskilling) a likely location is le Quesnel not Le Claesail (misspelling common 100 years ago). There are 3 unidentified soldiers in the Hillside Cemetary so maybe he is one of them.
