Although Jesse was too old to be called up to fight in the Great War, he volunteered because the iron mongers shop he worked in had to provide a volunteer and Jesse did so in place of the owner. My Great Grandma was not at all happy when he told her as he was married with 4 children, and he would have not have been expected to join up because of his age Jesse was killed in action in Belgium while serving in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment 1st/6th Battalion, during the abortive attack upon Winnipeg Farm on the 27th August 1917. Buried at the Tyn Cot cemetry.
