Thomas survived a gas attack in the trenches but died later in hospital in Ripon, miles from his home. His young wife, my great-grandmother, had two small children and little money and as far as I know was unable to visit him before he died. In recent years both my brother and I have visited Thomas's grave in the cemetery in Ripon. We found the grave among a row of war graves. It has been kept neat and tidy and we would like to thank the people who have shown respect for our great-grandfather and the other soldiers buried next to him over the years - it is much appreciated.
