John enlisted on September 4th 1914 in the 10th Batt. KRRC but was medically discharged as unfit because it was found he had endo-carditous, an inflamed heart. 2 weeks later, he was back at home in Nottingham. A year later, he tried again when he walked from his home in Snienton to the Derby Road Drill hall in Nottingham. He enlisted in the 1/7th Batt. Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was posted to the Somme in 1916. He was posted missing on July 1st 1916 on the first day of the Somme offensive but was eventually confirmed as killed in action on June 27th 1917, almost 1 year later. His body was never found and he still lies somewhere on a French field. He was 22 years old. John, you are a true hero. You left behind a young wife and a young son to fight for your king, your country and your family. You did a fine job, sir. And I am proud to be your great-nephew.
