My Great Grandfather, Private Thomas Gillson, 11th Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment, died on 15th June 1917at the Battle of Messines, defending Optic Trench from German attack. The Germans never reached the British wire and were forced to retreat. Two days later the 11th RWKR were relieved by the 12th East Surreys, and fighting eased on that front. If he could have survived another day or two would he have made it right through the war? Might I have had a chance to meet the returning hero? Alas, we will never know. Like so many I am grieved at the senseless loss of life during WWI, but at the same time proud of my Great Grandfather for the part he played in defending our nation. I knew my Great Grandmother briefly, but was too young to appreciate what she must have gone through, or ask her the many questions that now fill my head. How I wish I could talk to Thomas Gillson and hear his version of events, and tell him how I truly feel about his unselfish sacrifice. May he rest in peace. I would like to thank The Queen's Regiment and The Commonwealth War Graves Commission for all the details of my Great grandfather's service that they have so generously provided me with.
