John Ralston was born in Pollockshaws to Isabella and William. The family lived in Shawlands and William worked as a upholsterer and manufacturer of furnishings and trimmings.

John came to the University of Glasgow in 1913 and took Maths and French, both of which he passed.

John was a Lance Corporal in the 6th Cameron Highlanders and fought at the Battle of Loos where he died on the 26th September 1915.
