George Evanston Smith was born 5th April 1894 and lived on Hyndland Road in Glasggow. He studied at Hillhead High School. Whilst he was young he was a soprano soloist at St Mary's Cathedral and later learned the piano and organ. He was also a member of the 49th Glasgow Troop of Scouts where he acted as a scoutmaster.
George worked as an analytical chemist and was studying Chemistry at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College - known from 1912 as the Royal Technical College, now the University of Strathclyde – from session 1911-12 to session 1913-14. Smith successfully negotiated the first and second years of his course, but war then intervened, and he never returned to the College to compete his Associateship studies.
Having been a member of the Officer Training Corps he received his commission in August 1914 for the Argyll And Sutherland Highlanders and following training left for France. Leading his men, he died on the 25th September 1915 at the Battle of Loos.
Thank you.
