George Herbert Davies was born on the 16th November 1888 to Reverend John Bayley Davies and Susan Anslow Davies (nee Juckes) of Waters Upton, Shropshire. He was educated at Hereford Cathedral School.

In 1909 George came to the University of Glasgow to study Engineering and took courses in Mathematics, Natural Philosophy and Chemistry. George never graduated and instead went to work for John Brown's, the shipbuilding company.

George joined the Shropshire Light Infantry and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on the 15th August 1914 and promoted Lieutenant on the 21st March 1915. George joined the expeditionary Force in France in December 1914, attached to the 1st Bn. Manchester Regiment, becoming a machine-gun officer. He was invalided home in February 1915, but returned to the Front in April, attached to the 1st Bn. Shropshire Light Infantry. He died in Hooge, Belgium, on the 10th August 1915, aged 26. Major E. B. Luard wrote:

“He was in charge of the machine guns, and was most gallantly getting one into position when he was shot dead. He is a very great loss to the regiment. He was very popular with both the officers and men. I had a great admiration of him, and feel the loss of a very courageous, hard-working and valuble young officer.”
