George Brenchley initially joined Essex Police in 1913 and married Kate Giddens on 28th June. Their 1st child was born on 30th September.  On the formation of the Southend Borough Constabulary he transferred to them in 1914 as PC 32. On the oytbreak of war he was mobilised as part of the BEF with the Grenadier Guards. George fought at Mons and was injured on 25th August being awarded The Mons star. He must have had some leave in the winter of 1914 as Kate became pregnant and their second child was born on 13th October 2015. As a member of the Guards Division Frank saw action in both Flanders and The Somme. On 24th August 1918 the 3rg Guards Brigade advanced on St Leger. Lance Segeant George Brenchley was killed in action during this attack. He had fought throughout France and Flanders for 4 years and been wounded on 3 occasions. Few soldiers of WW1 would have seen more action than George. In 1920 army records show that his ife Kate was still living in Southend but their 2 children were residing at The Provincial Police Orpahange, Redhill. No doubt a consequence of George's death and KAte not having the funds to support their children. He will be forever remembered by all at Essex Police who are proud of his dedication and bravery. Frederick gave his life for us all in the true unconditional commitment of a Police Officer.
