Brian Calkin was the son of Harry and Margaret (Palfrey) Calkin, the grandson of Penry Palfrey, an artist. He was born on 21 Nov 1897 in Hampstead and educated at St Paul's cathedral choir school. He had had the privelege of singing in the choir at the coronation of King George V and, as and officer, organised concerts for his men.
