Having traced my Grandad who I never knew gave me a real insight into the bravery of all of the men and women who served in WW1. My Grandad and his 2 brothers served in this terrible conflict. Gt Uncle Hugh survived the war but was killed in a peacetime tragic accident serving in the Royal Navy submarine L24. Your letter to your brother James, my Gt Uncle, suggesting he ask for a transfer to your regiment probably didn't reach him before sadly you were killed in action. Having survived the atrocious conditions for so long it was heartbreaking to read that you died so late on. James survived and lived to a ripe old age but I guess like us will never have forgotten the sacrifice you and so many made for us. RIP Grandad.
