Alfred was the seventh of nine children of Edward Ballard and Susannah neé Simpson. He & his twin sister Ellen were born on 19th November 1884 at 16 Queens Street, Bury, Lancashire. Alfred died of wounds at the second battle of Ypres which he probably sustained as a result of the heavy shelling of the trenches around "Shell Trap Farm", north-west of Ypres, where he was positioned. Brother of Thomas William BALLARD who died 2nd February 1915.
