Duncan, we know you were one of the sons of Donald and Abigail Michael of 1 Ruisaurie, Kilmorack, and that you were training to be a solicitor before you emigrated. Your name is inscribed on the family gravestone in Wardlaw Cemetery: "Duncan, Major, 43rd Batt 79th Cam Highlanders of Winnipeg, Canada, also reported missing believed killed in action, Courcellette, France while leading his men during the Battle of the Somme, 8th October 1916, aged 31 years". Your brothers Thomas and Andrew also died in action with the Canadians during this war. We read that by the end of September several enemy redoubts on the Thiepval Ridge had been captured and during early October most of the high ground between the upper Ancre and Courcelette was also captured. It was during these ferocious battles that you unfortunately were assumed to have been killed in action, though your remains were never found. Rest in Peace. Harry.
