Dudley William Hailstone worked for the Union Assurance Society Ltd.  in the Manchester branch. He worked in the Guardian Plate Glass office having been appointed on 01 October 1913. He volunteered for active service in October 1914 and was sent to Reigate for training, initially as a rifleman in the London Irish Rifles (18th Battalion D Company). In May 1915 he was in training at Braintree and in November 1916 was promoted to Sergeant in London Irish No. 6 Syndicate, 3rd Army Infantry School, stationed in France. In February 1917 he was stationed with Salonika Force and in November of that year was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. He was killed in action while serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry 1st Battalion. He was 5 days away from his 21st birthday.
