As a private in the Labour Corps during 2nd World War a gang were on a night out on 27th September 1918 in Perth Scotland and Charles decided to take a short cut home to barracks. He drowned in the River Tummel near Aldcharmaig, Blair Atholl taking this short cut and it was 27 days before his body was found. There is a dedication to him at Islington Cemetery and Crem according to CWGC. His was buried 07/11/1918 in a public grave Z 16410 in Section Z 22 along with 9 other people. His address on his marriage certificate is given as 61/2 Payne Street Islington which was the Muckleston Family's address. His father was given as George Smith - Greengrocer. Served with 2nd Border Regiment Service No. 8208 before transferring to Labour Corps Service No. 40681 not 406801 as on cwgc website. From the Labour Corps website........***uming that the Medal Roll is correct this means he became a member of the Labour Corps early in 1918 and almost certainly in France.Without a service record I would expect that he was returned to the UK as he was no longer fit enough to remain in France or that he was back in the UK on leave. His number suggests he was in an Area Employment Company and that it was employed on the Lines of Communications but I am afraid I cannot tell you which Company or where it was located.
