Trooper Herbert Henry Hiley was one of nine members of the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club who were killed in the Great War. He was born in 1894 to Sarah Elizabeth and John Malcolm Hiley, lived in Windsor and attended the Windsor County Boys' School where he was school Captain from 1910-11. He was captain of the school football team and played for the Windsor and Eton Football Club. His father was postmaster at Windsor Castle. He had brothers William and John and sisters Lilian and Jessie. For a while, he lived at the Bell Pub and (what is now) Dedworth Road and what is now a small bloack of apartments. In 1914 the Windsor and Eton Regatta was held on Bank Holiday Monday August 3rd, and run on the River Thames in Windsor along the Brocas. Herbert raced in heats of the scratch Dongola and Eights events. Britain declared war on Germany the next day.
