James Roddie was a native of Manchester and came to live in Shirebrook prior to enlisting in September 1914 He was a married man with three children. During the British attack on Contalmaison on 16th July he received shrapnel wounds. in the right thigh and left hand and was brought to the Fransham Military Hospital, nr Wareham, Surrey for an operation and further treatment.. He died of his wounds and was buried in the cemetery at Shirebrook with full military honours.
