John (Jack) Hyde joined the Army in April 1914, following in his father's footsteps. He was drafted to France the same year, at the outbreak of war. He took part in the retreat from Mons and fought at Ypres, before being severely wounded in the Battle of the Somme.. He was due to be married on his next leave home.
