My great uncle Frank was a waggoner at his father's farm in Beckley, Kent before the war. He was named after his uncle who had been killed in a farming accident aged 21. He was unmarried and had three sisters. He had only been abroad for a month when he was shot by a sniper in Gorre, France. He was 27. His medals were sent to his devastated parents, William Percy and Phoebe Beale. My father, born two years later, was named Frank after him. He served in Crete the Second World War and spent years in a Bavarian POW camp before his release. I have a photo of my great uncle Frank on the wall in my kitchen. Even though we never met, I will never forget him.
