James was the eldest son of an ordinary working-class family in industrial Lancashire. The family ran a carrier business, moving loads from the new station at Middleton Junction. They were also shopkeepers in a modest way. My grandfather was only four when his big brother was killed, but James's death marked his whole childhood and devastated his parents and two older sisters.
