Lieutenant Harcourt Snowden was born on 12 December 1887. Employed as a schoolmaster, he was educated at Rugby School and Oxford and commissioned into the Hertfordshire Regiment in June 1913. On the morning of 11 January 1915 his battalion was holding a section of trench south east of Richebourg. While inspecting the posted sentries he crossed the Rue du Bois and was struck by enemy rifle fire and killed. A brother officer remembered of him, 'He was a fine example to us all of a good and straight living Englishman'
